Programme

A passport to join Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe

The Preparatory Course with International Immersion (CPII) is a two-year course that allows students to join the general or specialised engineering course in industrial digital transition at Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe, on the basis of continuous assessment, without taking a competitive examination. Students develop their scientific knowledge and strengthen their language skills during an English, German, Spanish or French-speaking programme with a partner university abroad.

ECTS credits are obtained at the end of each year.

1st year: Developing scientific reasoning and fundamental principles

The first year is organized around the Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe campus. Its objective is to:

✔ Consolidate the scientific tools that are essential to the ICAM Arts & Métiers engineer, both in terms of logic, reasoning and calculation techniques that are specific to mathematics, and in terms of the scientific methodology that is inherent to physical sciences.

✔Acquire basic skills in electrical and mechanical engineering: design and develop electrical/electronic and mechanical/mechatronic systems.

✔Achieve a level of language proficiency that allows you to begin your second year abroad.

✔Learn about computers through simple programming languages that are widely used in industry.

✔Make the transition to higher education and prepare your career plan.

The curriculum is broken down into 7 subject areas called Programme Units :

  • Mathematics for Engineers
  • Physics for Engineers
  • Computer Science and
  • Information Technology
  • Electrical & Automation
  • Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Human and Managerial
  • Training
  • Language Training

2nd year: Extending your knowledge while discovering the world

The second year is organized around the campus of a partner university in Europe or Canada. Its objective is to :

✔Ensure the consolidation of your skills in electrical and mechanical engineering.

✔Learn about the science of materials, to be able to choose the right material and calculate its strength.

✔Learn about industrial engineering in order to understand the business world and the specific characteristics of the industry.

✔Immerse yourself in a foreign country to learn about other cultures and other learning techniques.

✔Consolidate your language skills through the daily use of a foreign language.

The second year of the Preparatory Course with International Immersion can follow two different paths, depending on your language skills and technical level at the end of the first year :

1/ one whole year of immersion at one of Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe’s partner universities.

2/ progressive immersion consisting of one semester at Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe (120 hours of linguistic and scientific projects, and 60% of foreign language courses) and one semester abroad. If your language skills are insufficient, the second year will be spent in immersion at ICAM in Brussels or in a French-speaking country.

During the first year, each student shall submit several wishes to a jury consisting of the school’s teaching staff. A linguistic evaluation is carried out before allocating places in the various partner universities. The programme then depends on the course of study and the choice of university. Each second year course is personalized, and is the subject of a “Learning Agreement” which is drawn up jointly with the student and the Director of Studies of Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe.

ECTS credits

The ECTS credit is a points system developed by the European Union that allows academic recognition of studies abroad, facilitates the understanding of study programmes and encourages student mobility. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25 or 30 hours of work (coursework and personal work). One year of study represents 60 ECTS credits; that is 1,500 to 1,800 hours of work. The Preparatory Course with International Immersion results in the validation of 120 ECTS credits.

Thanks to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), and according to the Learning Agreement that has been drawn up, the credits obtained at the partner university are automatically transferred to Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe.

Profile

This high-level course is aimed at students who are curious, open to the world, and enjoy developing their scientific reasoning and language skills through experimentation.

To become a general or specialist engineer, a strong interest in science is essential.

  • 90% of places are allocated to students with a general baccalaureate with scientific options.
  • 10% of places are allocated to students with a baccalaureate in “industrial science and technology and sustainable development” (STI2D) or “laboratory science and technology”
    (STL).

Recommendation of options for the general baccalaureate

We recommend that you choose “Mathematics” as your special field in Year 12 (11th Grade), and we strongly suggest you maintain it in Year 13 (12th Grade). As for your 2nd special field, it should be preferably scientific, but this time you get to choose between: “Physics & Chemistry”, “Engineering Science”, “Digital Technology & Computer Science” or “Biology & Earth Sciences”. You are free to choose your 3rd special field in Year 12 (11th Grade) as it will not affect our selection. In Year 13 (12th Grade), taking the optional courses “Expert Mathematics” or “Complementary Mathematics” will be a bonus to your profile. This selection will allow you to enter the Preparatory Course with International Immersion (CPII) with sound basic knowledge. However, we do study all applications, and motivation remains the most important criterion as far as our school is concerned.

Thanks to the Preparatory Course with International Immersion, I was able to go to Vienna, where I enjoyed a truly immersive linguistic and cultural experience. In addition to receiving quality training in German, it gave me the opportunity to travel and make friends with people from all over Europe.

Maud Angenault - Promo 2022

During my Preparatory Course with International Immersion, I was able to acquire sound scientific grounding coupled with my first experience abroad, which enabled me to develop my language skills, as well as a range of other skills that will be useful both in my studies and in my future career.

Hugo Marmonier - Promo 2023

During my ERASMUS programme in Kaunas, Lithuania, I was able to meet people from all over the world and learn to live in a culture that is not my own while improving my English. I also had the chance to travel and discover many different landscapes, such as the northern lights in Lapland.

Emma Bianchi - Promo 2022

I learnt a lot from my ERASMUS+ programme in Karlsruhe. I discovered new ways of working and new cultures thanks to the student community there. But I also learned a lot about myself. I highly recommend this adventure, which will be etched in my memory for ever.

Tuition fees and admission

Admission

For French secondary school students, the admission process is conducted on the online platform Parcoursup. Students compile their motivation files and formulate their wishes directly on the platform. Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe studies each application with great interest. Candidates with eligible applications are then invited to a day of interviews to determine their motivation and team spirit, and whether or not their profile is suited to the training. If a student’s application is accepted, he/she then confirms his/her wish on the platform, and joins Icam, site de Strasbourg-Europe at the beginning of the school year in September.

For foreign students, admissions are based on individual applications and an interview.
